This project involved the redesign and reconstruction of a rooftop apartment located in East Berlin. Originally built in the 1990s, the existing layout presented several spatial limitations, particularly in terms of circulation, the relationship between rooms, and the efficient use of the available floor area.

The intervention focused on reorganizing the internal structure in order to clarify the spatial sequence and enlarge the main living area. Through a hybrid structural system combining steel and timber elements, several existing wooden columns were removed, allowing for a more open and continuous interior space.

The design concentrates the private functions into a compact sequence that opens toward a generous open-plan living room. Upon entering the apartment, a walk-through bathroom organizes the transition to the bedroom: the toilet is positioned on one side of the corridor and the shower on the other. The bedroom itself is conceived as a custom-built wooden volume carefully inserted between the bathroom and the living area. Its back wall slightly protrudes into the corridor, leaving a visible trace that clarifies the internal spatial organization.

As part of the renovation, the entire fire protection system was replaced and upgraded according to current building regulations, introducing new materials and construction solutions compliant with contemporary safety standards.

The open-plan living space is designed to remain highly adaptable. A full-height folding partition allows the room to be divided into two independent areas, enabling the living room to temporarily function as a guest bedroom or workspace when required. The result is a compact yet flexible apartment where spatial clarity and adaptability become the central design principles.
