This project involves the conversion and extension of the rooftop of a residential building in Berlin’s Wedding district, introducing three new apartments with a total surface of approximately 250 square meters. Alongside the rooftop development, the intervention also includes a careful renovation of the existing building in order to upgrade its technical systems and improve the overall spatial and architectural quality of the property.
The rooftop addition reinterprets the traditional Berlin attic typology by introducing contemporary living spaces that open toward the city. The three apartments are organized to maximize daylight and cross-ventilation, with living areas positioned along the façades and private rooms arranged toward quieter interior zones. Generous terraces extend the living spaces outward, creating a direct relationship between interior and exterior while offering views across the surrounding urban fabric.
Structurally, the new construction is designed as a lightweight system placed on top of the existing masonry building. A hybrid structure of timber and steel minimizes additional loads on the historic structure while allowing flexible interior layouts and generous spans for the open living areas. The new roof geometry integrates insulation and contemporary building technologies while maintaining a clear and compact architectural volume that respects the proportions of the existing building.
In parallel with the rooftop conversion, the project includes the renovation and technical upgrade of the existing building. Common areas, circulation spaces, and building services are modernized, while the façade and roof envelope are improved to meet current energy and fire safety standards. Particular attention is given to integrating the new residential units with the existing structure, ensuring a coherent relationship between the historic building and the contemporary rooftop addition.
The project demonstrates how underused rooftop spaces within the dense fabric of Berlin can be transformed into high-quality living environments while simultaneously contributing to the renewal and long-term value of the existing building.
