This project involves the complete renovation of an existing residential building in Potsdam combined with the construction of a new rooftop extension. The intervention introduces sixteen new apartments with a total residential area of approximately 1,230 square meters while upgrading the existing structure to contemporary living and energy standards.
The project reinterprets the existing building through a careful balance between preservation and transformation. The original structure is refurbished and technically upgraded, including improvements to the façade, insulation, and building services, while maintaining the architectural character of the building within its urban context.
The rooftop addition creates new residential units that take advantage of natural light, open views, and outdoor terraces. Designed as a lightweight construction placed above the existing structure, the new volume integrates contemporary materials and building technologies while respecting the proportions of the historic building.
The apartments are organized to maximize spatial flexibility and daylight, with living areas oriented toward the façades and terraces. Vertical circulation and common areas are modernized to connect the new rooftop level seamlessly with the existing floors.
Through the combination of renovation and vertical extension, the project demonstrates how existing urban buildings can be adapted to contemporary residential needs while increasing housing capacity and enhancing the architectural quality of the building.
